The seminar programme has been divided into 12 easy-to-follow Pathways. Follow the Pathway that matches your own area of interest.
The Ferl Practitioners' Programme (FPP) has been created to equip individuals involved in the teaching and learning process with the skills needed for harnessing the potential of information and learning technology (ILT/ ICT). It is designed for delivery within colleges, facilitated by local college staff, and uses materials designed by the Ferl team at Becta (the British Educational Communications and Technology Agency). Funding from the Scottish Further Education Funding Council (SFEFC) has provided the Ferl Practitioners' Programme to all colleges in Scotland. SFEU have co-ordinated the amendment of the materials for the Scottish sector and a mapping to the newly validated SQA Professional Development Award (PDA) in Online Learning has been completed. The JISC Regional Support Centres and the Becta Helpline are supporting the local delivery of the Programme within colleges.

Macromedia Dreamweaver is a popular choice of package incorporating tools for web page creation and web site control and management. It brings sophisticated techniques within the grasp of non-technical people and produces professional results with a minimum of effort. This is a practical workshop for those who are users of the World Wide Web and would like to use a web publishing tool to create their own web pages and manage their web site. Whether they have already started authoring on the web or not they will be able to produce a high quality site without the need for programming skills.
Increasingly, web designers now wish to incorporate more than text and static images in their sites. Macromedia Flash provides a means of creating animated and interactive content that is optimised for web delivery. This can include relatively simple elements, such as animated text, images and buttons, as well as more sophisticated multimedia applications, such as tutorials and simulations. This is a practical workshop aimed at web users who would like to start using Flash to create animated and interactive content for the web.
The JISC Collections Team will be consulting Further Education Institutions about Immersive Education's role-playing software system, Kar2ouche. Kar2ouche brings teaching and learning activities to life by letting students and teachers create pictures, storyboards, animations, movies, comics, handouts and magazines. These can be printed, emailed or published on the web. As part of the consultation process the RSC will be hosting this free demonstration by Kar2ouche on their software and all those attending the event will receive a free CD of the Kar2ouche software.
Use Microsoft Applications to create electronic, interactive teaching materials. Learn how to find and incorporate media rich resources on the Web and use them with learners. Simple solutions to populate Virtual Learning Environments and college Intranets. This is a ˝ -day workshop that will introduce participants to the features of MSPowerPoint most effective for producing learning materials. Participants will be shown how electronic resources can be integrated, and WWW resources quickly found and exploited in meaningful ways.
The increasing use of on-line delivery of teaching materials for learners brings with it the need to consider the tools for on-line assessment, and their uses. Software or web sites used to create assessment activities can be simple to use - often the time it takes to prepare a quiz is down to the content. If you have existing paper based quizzes these can sometimes be easily converted into an on line activity. This is a ˝ -day workshop for teaching practitioners that will introduce them to freely available tools to create electronic quizzes and assessment exercises.
For many sections of society the World Wide Web is becoming an essential part of everyday life. Whether being used for commerce, research, education or leisure, one of the key features of the web is the ease with which individuals can publish on-line information. Even in a short space of time sophisticated and exciting results can be achieved with relative simplicity. This is a practical workshop for web users who wish to start creating their own web pages. Whether you are providing page content for business, education or leisure, this one-day workshop will give you the essential skills you need to make your information available on the web.
The advent of XML heralds a revolution in web development, providing a means of delivering information in a variety of ways and to different devices. XML offers new opportunities and challenges to both people creating web pages and those involved in sophisticated back-end information systems, set to provide a powerful and flexible alternative to the long established language HTML. This practical workshop, aimed at experienced HTML authors, introduces a wide range of new and exciting possibilities from multiple content transformations to creating WAP pages and producing XML from databases.

This Project Management Workshop is aimed at senior managers and anyone who needs to manage projects in Higher Education institutions or Further Education colleges. It is a one-day seminar delivered by JISC infoNET, the Centre of Expertise in the Planning and Implementation of Information Systems. The workshop will be an interactive day aiming to introduce delegates to a structured approach to Project Management.
An increasing awareness of accessibility issues suggests that designing web pages that are usable and accessible by all users is ever more important. This is true both in terms of good practice as a design principle, and also to satisfy the UK legal requirements of the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) and more recently the Special Educational Needs and Disabilities Act (SENDA). A tendency to focus on the graphical web browser, and also visual impairment, overlooks the variety of differing physical and cognitive abilities, and equipment and techniques that are available to support these. The "Design for All" principle, which underpins this workshop, encourages designers to develop a single accessible web site that does not impose barriers to usage.
In January 2005 all institutions of higher and further education in Scotland face the full impact of the Freedom of Information (Scotland) Act 2002. More immediately all institutions have to prepare and submit their publication schemes to the FOI Commissioner for approval by 31 May 2004. The workshop will deal with the Act and its implications for College managements over the next two years. It will also detail the steps that have to be taken, discuss potential problems and offer guidance about the route towards full compliance.
Presentations from this event:
Having mastered the basics of HTML fairly quickly, many web developers will then look for ways in which they can enhance their pages. This workshop will also investigate some of the fundamental steps required to produce accessible content as well as introducing current guidelines and web standards. This workshop provides a platform from which to make the next step towards more attractive, functional and accessible web content as well as providing a brief overview of some more advanced technologies for web interaction and content management/delivery.

With the large scale deployment of VLEs across both Further and Higher Education, the concept of content re-use online is rapidly gaining a foothold in e-learning. Consequently content creation and reuse along with finding and using existing content is becoming an ever more important feature of effective e-learning. This workshop examines and assesses the advantages and disadvantages of a range of content types both produced by the course developer and found online as existing resources. The integration and embedding of a range of re-usable learning objects, singly, aggregated and bound with other content to enhance learning is explored.

Virtual Learning Environments (VLEs) are becoming an important focal point for the investigation and development of e-Learning, whether used for learning support or for the actual delivery of courses. While they provide an important framework to facilitate the online learning process, issues remain of appropriate and effective usage. This workshop examines the effective pedagogic use of a VLE across diverse levels of learning and teaching, and aims to match existing practice with strategies for web based e-learning.

Would you like to use film and video in your teaching but are finding it difficult to track down copyright cleared content? Education Media OnLine is a JISC-funded set of ten collections of film and video, hosted by EDINA and cleared and digitised through the JISC's Managing Agent and Advisory Service (MAAS). That work is ongoing, and should eventually result in about 300 hours of material becoming available. The films are of high quality, and are fully downloadable, either in full or as segments, and can be used freely in learning, teaching and research.
