07 September 2004 - Wireless Hacking & Technical Countermeasures

Wireless Security is a 2-day technical course in wireless penetration and countermeasures. The first day is used to highlight the conceptual risks associated with badly configured wireless networks, and give live hands-on technical examples of attack & penetration techniques that are adopted by attackers 'in the wild' to compromise poorly protected networks. The second day of the course focuses more on best practice protection models and their application.

28 September 2004 - am Childlink Information Service Workshop

Childlink is an innovative online database focusing on Legislation, Policies, and Practices regarding children, young people and families who live in the United Kingdom and on the Island of Ireland. This is a ˝ -day workshop and will include a demonstration of the service, hands-on and questions & answers session.

11 October 2004 - Linux System Administration (4 days)

This course is designed to strengthen a delegate's understanding of the Linux OS and administration. On completion of this course, delegates will be able to install and fully administrate a Linux environment through skills learned, such as: file systems; processes; managing users and groups; basic TCP/IP; backing-up and restoring of data; printing; monitoring and installation. Together with the Linux Fundamentals course delegates are prepared to take and pass the Linux Professionals Institute vendor-independent exams T1a and T1b.

This is a ˝ -day workshop for teaching practitioners that will introduce them to the features of an Interactive Whiteboard. Participants will be shown interesting and innovative ways of engaging learners in meaningful ways that exploit the features of the equipment.

26 October 2004 - Detecting and Deterring Plagiarism

The growth of the world wide web, with its vast range of content, easy opportunities for cut-and-paste, and growing market of commercial sites helping the potential plagiarist. The education sector has seen a significant increase in cases of plagiarism in recent years, with observers suspecting that many more cases go undetected and/or unreported. This practical workshop, in association with the JISC Plagiarism Advisory Service, explores web-based and other methods of detecting and deterring plagiarism, and is aimed in particular at teaching, administrative and library staff in FE & HE who wish to find out more about this complex and controversial subject and how to deal with it.

A wealth of resources and techniques now exist which serve as a source both for exciting examples of new teaching practices, as well as easily accessible methods for adoption into everyday learning and teaching . This is a practical workshop for users of the World Wide Web who would like to understand more about how the internet can be used for teaching and learning. The workshop aims to introduce and explore some of the tools and techniques used in internet-based teaching and participants will have the opportunity to create some simple web-based materials

Are you responsible for records management in your institution and need a brief introduction to it all? Has this become your role as a result of the Data Protection and Freedom of Information legislation? An Introduction to Records Management is a one-day event offered by the Regional Support Centre of the Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC) and delivered by JISC infoNet, the Centre of Expertise in the Planning and Implementation of Information Systems.

In addition to producing electronic presentations, PowerPoint can be used with a free "add in" called Producer which can be used to put together comprehensive learning packages that take account of individual needs and different learning styles. This workshop shows delegates how to use Producer software to integrate PowerPoint presentations with video, audio & web pages.

24 November 2004 - Content Solutions for e-Learning

With the increasing development of web based e-learning the concept of content re-use online is rapidly gaining in importance. Consequently content creation and re-use along with finding and using existing content is becoming an ever more important feature of effective e-learning. This workshop examines and assesses the advantages and disadvantages of a range of content types both produced by the course developer and found online as existing resources. The integration and embedding of a range of re-usable learning objects, singly, aggregated and bound with other content to enhance learning is explored. Product specific issues and practicalities are not covered.

25 November 2004 - Assessment and Communications for e-Learning

The rising profile of web-based e-Learning has brought online assessment and the use of communications into sharp focus. Assessment is a key element of any learning environment while the use of communications has an important role to play in course delivery and supporting online assessment. Most web based delivery systems include a range of facilities to provide structured learning content linked to online assessment, together with a range of communication and collaboration tools. While they provide an important framework to facilitate the e-learning process, the effective use of online assessment and communication tools needs in depth consideration.

08 December 2004 - Exploring XML

The advent of XML heralds a revolution in web development, providing a means of delivering information in a variety of ways and to different devices. XML offers new opportunities and challenges to both people creating web pages and those involved in sophisticated back-end information systems, set to provide a powerful and flexible alternative to the long established language HTML. This practical workshop, aimed at experienced HTML authors, introduces a wide range of new and exciting possibilities from multiple content transformations to creating WAP pages and producing XML from databases.

13 December 2004 - Macromedia Flash MX 2004: application development (3 day workshop)

This course focuses on using screens, built-in components, behaviors, and data binding to quickly get students proficient in building Flash applications. The course also introduces the ActionScript language and teaches students fundamental programming constructs including loops, conditional logic, functions, and arrays. This course is for people without prior programming skills but are familiar with Flash and want to use it to create applications and/or learn ActionScript.

18 January 2005 - Creating a Managed Learning Environment (MLE)

MLEs are about joining up systems and processes for the benefit of the learner. The Government e-learning and Lifelong Learning agendas mean that MLE development (regionally as well as within institutions) is a necessity. Some institutions are struggling to link their VLE to essential admin systems while others are a long way down the road of full integration. JISC has produced the 'Creating an MLE infoKit' to highlight the issues and lessons learned to date - experiences from the sector are needed for it to grow and retain currency and the workshop is one way of getting involved with this community of practice.

Basic copyright issues in relation to online moving images, basic video editing using free or affordable software & the integration of online audio-visual material into learning resources.

16 February 2005 - LOM (Learning Object Metadata) Workshop - 2 day

This two-day training programme, provides an explanation of the LOM (Learning Object Metadata) profile which has been developed for the cataloguing of Learning Objects. The workshop provides detailed instruction on the use of the various elements within the profile, and, on the second day, practical sessions using the interface to catalogue selected learning object examples.

23 February 2005 - Dreamweaver MX04: Creating & Managing Accessible web sites

Macromedia Dreamweaver is a popular choice of package incorporating tools for web page creation and web site control and management. This workshop aims to utilise the functionality of Dreamweaver for web page creation, content management and web site management, while ensuring all pages are accessible.

24 February 2005 - Design Solutions for e-Learning

e-Learning has become increasingly important in all educational sectors through the use of web-based delivery platforms. Such systems provide an important framework to facilitate e-learning, however, issues of appropriate and effective use remain. This workshop aims to match existing face-to-face practise with strategies for developing web-based e-Learning. It employs a practical, problem-solving approach to the design of pedagogically fit e-Learning across diverse levels of learning and teaching.

1 March 2005 - VoIP & IPT Introduction - 2 day

This two-day course has been designed to fulfil an introduction to Cisco IPT and VoIP in general. The course will provide, based on existing data networking knowledge, detail of VoIP design and troubleshooting with focus upon designs and implementations. This workshop is aimed at Technical and Networking staff who require VoIP and IPT understanding and who have a sound data networking or traditional voice background.

03 March 2005 - Education Media Online and Education Image Gallery Workshop

Education Media OnLine is a JISC-funded set of ten collections of film and video, hosted by EDINA. Films are of high quality, and are fully downloadable, either in full or as segments, and can be used freely in learning, teaching and research. at present.

Education Image Gallery provides instant access to a unique collection of 50,000 images. Drawn from the vast resources of Getty Images® , including the Hulton Archive, Photodisc and the Getty Images News Service. Selected by leading academics, the curriculum-related images are copyright cleared for free use in learning, teaching and research by members of subscribing institutions.

This workshop will deal directly with the issues of copyright and related rights which arise in the development and delivery of eLearning materials and any other online content. This day workshop will comprise a mix of presentations and case studies and will look at the issues surrounding copyright focussing on eLearning materials.

13 June 2005 - "Abracadabra" - Using courseGenie to create interactive teaching materials

This hands-on workshop will show participants how to use courseGenie to create electronic, interactive teaching materials. Using couseGenie you can take course material in a Word document and transform it into a dynamic online course. From one Word document you can generate a set of web pages, including navigation, interactive features and self test questions.

14 June 2005 - Benevolent Bill: What Microsoft does for accessibility (postponed)

Do you want to know more about the accessibilty features in Microsoft Internet Explorer and Word? This session will give you the chance to learn about the range of built in features in Windows that are either designed to enhance accessibility or can be used creatively to make learning more accessible to students with a wide range of learning differences and support needs.

Presented by the JISC service TechDis, this event is aimed at ELS staff in colleges. The day will intoduce staff to TechDis and the Assistive Technology Box Scheme, allowing hands-on sessions using various assistive technology software and hardware.
