HumanWare design and manufacture electronic equipment for students with Visual Impairments and Additional Support Needs. Their products include a range of electronic magnifiers, GPS systems, Braille technology and scanners.
During the workshop, HumanWare will be demonstrating the Zoom-Ex portable scanner. This is a lightweight, foldable laptop camera which captures a page of text and reads it aloud – within 1-2 seconds. The text is also formatted to fit the laptop screen, where each word is highlighted as it is spoken. The user is able to adjust the rate of the synthesised reading voice along with the size and colour of the on-screen text.
One of the real advantages of the Zoom-Ex is the speed at which it captures the pages of a book. Due to the patented motion detector, it is possible to scan at a rate of 20 pages per minute – you simply need to turn the pages and the Zoom-Ex captures automatically. These pages can then be saved as either pictures or text files; the latter being suitable for transfer onto a portable player such as the VictorReader Stream MP3 / Daisy player so that the file can be listened to on the move.
