You may be familiar with the RSCtv brand, where the RSC have been offering a regular webinar series under this banner for a couple of years. We are now extending the content available via RSCtv to include the following:
A regular lunchtime webinar series delivered online to your desktop. Featuring a range of interesting topics, the webinar lasts around 45 minutes and consists of a presentation followed by a question and answer session. A list of topics and details about how to register is published on the events page of the RSC Scotland website.
Where possible, we record our RSCtv sessions to enable those who were unable to attend the live session to watch the recording at a time that suits them. We have built up an archive of topics including Emerging Technologies, Mobile Technologies, QR Codes, Effective Assessment & Feedback, & Free Resources to Support Inclusion. This useful archive will continue to grow as we offer further RSCtv sessions. Visit our RSCtv page to see the full list of RSCtv Watch Again sessions.
This is an online presentation lasting around one hour. We have identified a list of topics relating to the use of educational technology which will be of interest to various staff groupings; senior & middle managers, teaching, technical, learning resources, support for learning staff & equality advisors, as well as admin and support staff. These presentations can be delivered exclusively for staff within your institution at a time that suits, perhaps during a staff development event or other CPD activities taking place throughout the academic year. Contact Celeste McLaughlin for further details.
The RSC have piloted courses which we have delivered fully online during academic year 2010-11. An underpinning concept of these online courses is the importance of dialogue and sharing of practice, ideas and perspectives amongst a group of people in order to learn. By focusing on authentic tasks, the social aspects of learning and the development of a learner community, the course activities support not only the individual participants learning but on the learning of the group as a whole.
These short two-hour sessions will be delivered virtually in real-time via Video Conferencing and/or webinars and content and resources will be available via the RSC Learning Platform. The first of these minis will be Learning to Learn Online, which will introduce participants to the tools and skills required to be a successful online learner.
These are longer courses lasting between 2-3 weeks. These courses are fully supported by RSC Scotland staff; they will be delivered via the RSC Learning Platform, and will make use of a number of online tools including webinars, discussion forums and chat. We are at the early stages of developing these courses and we have already developed two online courses:
The Learning Online courses will be delivered over the next academic year. The RSC Scotland team will be developing further online courses, which we will add to our online delivery schedule as they become available.
The RSC Scotland team will be focusing on online delivery of workshops and events where possible. This decision has been influenced by the resources and staff available to deliver a service to the whole of Scotland. The RSC Scotland team can deliver face-to-face workshops on a first come, first served basis and dependent on the staffing available, we will endeavour to deliver any requested face-to-face input at events.
As well as delivering presentations and courses, the RSC Scotland team have a range of other Learning & Development services which have been established and refined over a number of years.
The eSkills for eLearning Course was devised by the RSC in 2006 and has undergone a number of updates and revisions, the latest in 2010. The course consists of 8 modules and covers the essential skills and knowledge required by teaching practitioners to enable them to use technology for learning and teaching.
The resources are available for preview purposes via our learning platform. On request we can provide these resources in zipped format for upload to the Moodle or Blackboard VLEs. The RSC will support the roll-out of e-Skills by the learning providers we support via a training transfer strategy.
The RSC has developed an online Training Needs Analysis, which can be deployed to help identify the technology skills level of staff in your institution. The TNA takes the form of an online survey, which can be customised for your institution. A sample survey is available for you to view. We offer this service on a first come, first served basis and some planning is required before the TNA can be implemented so please contact us well in advance to the date you would like the TNA conducted. On completion of the TNA the RSC will analyse the survey data and return both the full data and a short report in both paper and electronic format. We can also offer a Student Technology Survey, which can be implemented independently or in parallel with the staff TNA survey.
ETNA (the Electronic Training Needs Analysis) is a series of national surveys spanning over 10 years, giving an insight into the changing technology landscape of Further Education in Scotland. It presents valuable strategic information to decision-makers within colleges and universities, and to any external agency and organisation interested in tertiary education. The fourth in the series was published in 2010 and a copy of the ETNA 2010 report can be downloaded here. A further ETNA is planned for the current academic year.
The RSC has developed a suite of briefings that provide an overview of new technologies coming into the mainstream. They describe the benefits and identify the issues and challenges that need to be addressed as they are rolled out and used more widely in Colleges and HEIs. These briefings are available on our website and can be viewed from your desktop. Topics covered include Mobile Technologies, IPR & Copyright, and e-Safety & e-Safeguarding. The Topic Briefings also form part of our RSCtv OnDemand offerings, which are delivered online by someone from the RSC Scotland team and will include a Q&A session. Follow this link to view the Topic Briefings available.
As a result of project-based training previously delivered by the RSC team, we have a number of e-Assessment resources, which can be downloaded for use within your institutional VLE (available for Moodle or Blackboard). Topics covered include Film & Media studies, Business & Admin, Core Skills, Information Technology and Travel & Tourism. Follow this link to view the Bank on Success resources.
The Xerte Online Toolkit is an Open Source content creation tool. The RSC have a small number of learning objects available to download which were developed as part of project based Xerte training we have previously delivered. These include An Introduction to e-Learning resource, and an e-Assessment resource. Follow this link to view the Xerte resources.
These resources were developed as part of an SFC funded staff development programme when the RSC delivered project-based training to staff from a number of colleges. The output of this training consists of well over 120 small resources covering a range of subject areas. These resources can be downloaded and adapted for non-commercial educational purposes. Follow this link to view the eMerge resources.
The RSC have been working with our local institutions over the last few years to produce case studies highlighting the innovative and creative use of technology in tertiary education in Scotland. There are over 60 case studies available for download including a number of podcasts and videos. These are a fantastic resource demonstrating the innovative work taking place throughout Scottish Further & Higher Education across a range of areas. Follow this link to view the Case Studies.
A select few of the case studies were nominate for our inaugural Innovation in Technology Awards (iTechs) and future case studies will be eligible for entry for our annual iTech Awards.
